Visiting the museum
The museum invites you to visit the permanent exhibitions, presenting collections which are closely connected with the history and cultural heritage of the region, constituting a perfect complement to the history and knowledge of the culture and society.
Our museum offers Polish or English speaking guides. Visiting the permanent exhibitions for organized groups takes from one to one and a half hours, and around two hours for individual visitors. Some of the rooms in the Bishops Palace are small, that is why a group cannot exceed thirty people. If the group is bigger, it has to be divided into two smaller groups. Then the visit is conducted by two guides simultaneously.
Reservation of the guided service has to be made in the Museum’s Department of Education and Promotion by phone: +48 13 43 213 76.
Another interesting educational activity of the Museum are guided tours of the old town and the old cemetery in Krosno.
The tour of historical monuments of the old town: Bishops Palace (the headquarters of The Subcarpathian Museum in Krosno), Piłsudskiego street, the parish church of the Holy Trinity, the parish belfry (from the outside), Krosno town square (old boundaries, the former Mayor’s residence and Renaissance Town Hall, the existing Mayor’s House), the Franciscan church (Oświęcim Chapel).
Old Krosno Cemetery: a necropolis founded in 1786 and closed in 1954, where many valuable tombstones and a monument to the January Uprising have been preserved. The guided tour of the lanes in the cemetery presents the history of the city from the mid-19th c. to the beginning of the 20th c. and stories of outstanding citizens of Krosno.

The Past Enlivened – an archaeological exhibition organized along the fragment of the original Krosno’s 14th century town wall. It presents a history of colonisation of the Subcarpathian region from the earliest traces of human activity in the Palaeolithic period to the Early Middle Ages. An evocative artistic design adds to the rich collection of tools, weapons, ceramics and other objects of daily use. The exhibition has been awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
The exhibition presenting the Royal Town of Krosno from its beginnings to the present day. Basing on significant archaeological discoveries it gives a visitor an image of the medieval and Renaissance town. In another part of this exhibition painting works, combined with other valuable exhibits, create an impression of the nineteenth-century Galicia and its inhabitants. The remaining parts of the exhibition consist in the presentation of the exhibits related to the period of World War I, interwar period, German occupation and the resistance after 1944. The exhibition ends with a collection of pictures from the most recent years of Krosno. There is also a musical instrument which provides an exceptional value for the exhibition.
The History of Lighting is the exhibition which is the pride of the museum. The core of it is the Europe’s biggest collection of paraffin lamps, coming from various European and world factories. This exhibition presents the most popular light sources in the chronological order: from the ancient oil lamps and old candlesticks to the electric lamps from the early 20th c. The unique interior arrangement introduces us to the climate of bourgeois living room from the turn of the century.
An exhibition of paintings and sculptures which recalls the rich artistic history of the town and showcases achievements of graduates of Polish and foreign schools of fine arts associated with the region. There are works of students of Jan Matejko (one of the most famous Polish painters) – Stanisław Bergman, Seweryn Bieszczad, Franciszek Daniszewski and the artists active over the last 50 years – Zdzisław Truskolaski, Bronisław Olszewski, Jan Ekiert oraz Władysław Kandefer.

Their instruments – like the piano in the museum – met the highest performance standards and have won international industrial exhibitions many times.
This exhibition shows traditions of glass industry in the region. It presents not only the first sets of utility glass produced by the largest European glassworks, Krosno Glassworks and modern production lines, but also industrial designs and artistic products of several glassworks from Krosno and the district. A collection of photographs showing the history of the glass industry in the region and glassmaking techniques is a supplement to the exhibition.
